Studio Babelsberg and the Mediadesign Hochschule announce cooperation agreement

Long-term securing of the Babelsberg Film School for digital production, animation and visual effects at the Babelsberg media location

Save the Date: Press Conference on 15th July

The private Babelsberg Film School, situated at the Babelsberg media site since April this year, is now, from 1st July, officially managed as a partnership between the company Studio Babelsberg AG and the Mediadesign Hochschule.

The Mediadesign Hochschule für Design und Informatik (Mediadesign University of Applied Sciences for Design and Informatics) is the majority shareholder and in this capacity is responsible for the further development of the school. The state-accredited University is located in Berlin, Munich and Düsseldorf and has its registered offices in Berlin.

More than 850 students have enrolled in Bachelors and Masters study programmes in on-air design, game design, media design, media management, media informatics and fashion design.

The Mediadesign Hochschule, in its leading capacity, will also pursue provisional state accreditation for the school by the Brandenburg Ministry of Science, Research and Culture. Studio Babelsberg AG will continue to take care of networking with companies in the film industry.

“The Babelsberg Film School, with its proximity to Studio Babelsberg and its forward-looking study programme, is one of the most innovative college establishments in recent years. We look forward to contributing to the further development of this new college.
Hartmut Bode, Vice-Chancellor of the Mediadesign Hochschule

The Babelsberg Film School offers unique and practical industry training for animation and visual effects throughout Germany. The idea of establishing the Babelsberg Film School was developed by the Berlin-Brandenburg Media Board and Studio Babelsberg AG, in close collaboration with the Brandenburg Ministry of Economics, the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture and the "Konrad Wolf“ College for Film and Television.

Media Board Director Petra Müller: “We are pleased that Studio Babelsberg has succeeded, in such a short time, to find a strong and competent partner for the long-term development of the Babelsberg Film School. The educational profiles of both schools complement each other ideally and the cooperative "spirit" is spot on. This will result in the education provided at the Babelsberg Film School cementing, extending and rounding off the skills at this location in the extremely important future-oriented fields of animation and digital production”.

Hartmut Bode, Vice-Chancellor of the Mediadesign Hochschule: “The Babelsberg Film School, with its proximity to Studio Babelsberg and its forward-looking study programme, is one of the most innovative college establishments in recent years We look forward to contributing to the further development of this new college. The entire filming location of Babelsberg will profit from this in the long term. We are convinced that it will be a success, as the concept and the study programmes offered at the Babelsberg Film School and the Mediadesign Hochschule complement each other optimally. Our game design study programme can be mentioned here, as we were the first university in Germany to offer such a course and, in terms of animation and visual effects, it differs little from the requirements in the film industry”.

Marius Schwarz, Financial Director at Studio Babelsberg AG and Commercial Managing Director at Babelsberg Film School: "The Mediadesign Hochschule is the perfect partner for Studio Babelsberg as well as for the Babelsberg Film School. We are more than satisfied with this solution. We can say, already now, that the partnership is very positive on all levels. The competence and expertise of the Mediadesign Hochschule form an optimal complement to the existing orientation in terms of content and from a commercial point of view. All participants can profit greatly from this partnership. We would like to take this chance to again thank the Media Board and the Ministry of Science for their enormous and unwavering support.”

At a press conference to be held in the fx.Center in Potsdam-Babelsberg (invitation to follow) on the 15th of July at 11 o’clock, ideas and content, as well as the responsible staff at the newly structured Babelsberg Film School, will be presented for the first time.
