Studio Babelsberg Co-Production scores ACADEMY AWARD® win - Award underscores rising international prestige of German film industry

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences awarded Studio Babelsberg Co-Production “The Counterfeiters” on Sunday with the film industry’s most coveted and significant prize: Director Stefan Ruzowitzky’s drama received the OSCAR® for the best foreign language film.

After previous wins for Roman Polanski’s, “The Pianist”, and political thriller, “The Constant Gardener”, Studio Babelsberg celebrated yet another win at Hollywood’s yearly acknowledgement to cinema’s best and brightest.
“We are incredibly happy and congratulate director Stefan Ruzowitzky, his producers at Magnolia Film and Aichholzer Film, whole-heartedly for the recognition of their work”, announced Christoph Fisser, Member of the Board of Directors of Studio Babelsberg AG.

This proves that Hollywood’s perception of Germany as merely a film financier or facilities provider has changed as more and more German stories prove themselves with international audiences.

“After last year’s OSCAR® for “The Lives of Others”, this makes for the second German-language production in a row to be awarded what is for international filmmakers and producers the most important prize of the year. This is a crucial and positive acknowledgement of the German film community and a great chance to showcase the increasing momentum of a globalized film industry. This proves that Hollywood’s perception of Germany as merely a film financier or facilities provider has changed as more and more German stories prove themselves with international audiences”, said Charlie Woebcken, CEO and President Studio Babelsberg AG.

Staying true to its principle, “Act Global - Spend Local”, Studio Babelsberg continues to invest in German-Language and European productions. Reference Funds, or public grants that the Studio receives for the box-office success of its international big-budget productions, are used to provide financing for smaller and medium-budget productions. “The Counterfeiters” was partially financed with Reference Funds Studio Babelsberg was previously awarded for its productions, “The Pianist”, “80 Days Around the World”, and “Sahara”.
The large proportion of international productions coming to Studio Babelsberg has provided an exchange of skill and capacity, strengthening the expertise of Germany’s film industry, and its market position internationally.
