The Studio Babelsberg’s production The Reader was nominated for the European Film Awards 2009 in the categories European Film, European Actor (David Kross) and European Actress (Kate Winslet). The 22nd Awards Ceremony will be held on December 12 in Bochum.

The Reader is based on a best-selling novel, translated into 40 languages since its release in 1995. The Oscar-nominated and award-winning director Stephen Daldry (The Hours, Billy Elliot) directed the film. Studio Babelsberg (Neunte Babelsberg Film GmbH) produced The Reader as executive production company. The film was shot on location in Berlin, Babelsberg, Görlitz, Cologne, and New York. Academy Award winners Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack (Mirage Enterprises), both men recently deceased, served as producers together with Donna Gigliotti and Redmond Morris. Bob and Harvey Weinstein oversaw the production as executive producers. The executives of Studio Babelsberg AG Carl Woebcken and Christoph Fisser and the Managing Director of Studio Babelsberg Motion Pictures Henning Molfenter are co-producers of the film. The leading roles are played by the brilliant Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes as well as the up-and-coming German actor David Kross, who also received the European SHOOTING STAR award at the Berlinale Film Festival.
