THE BOOK THIEF began principal photography at Germany’s Studio Babelsberg, directed by Brian Percival (DOWNTOWN ABBEY). The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Markus Zusack. The cast of THE BOOK THIEF includes Geoffrey Rush (THE KING’S SPEECH), Emily Watson (BREAKING THE WAVES), Sophie Nélisse (MONSIEUR LAZHAR) and German actress Heike Makatsch (HILDE). Academy Award nominee Anna B. Sheppard (THE PIANIST, SCHINDLER’S LIST) is the film’s costume designer. Director of Photography is Florian Ballhaus (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA), production designer is Simon Elliott (IRON LADY) and the editor of the film is John Wilson (BILLY ELLIOT).
Principal photography will take place in Germany, mainly at Studio Babelsberg and on location in Berlin, Brandenburg, and the city of Görlitz (Saxony).
THE BOOK THIEF is a Fox 2000 Pictures production and a co-production of Studio Babelsberg. Karen Rosenfelt and Ken Blancato are producing. Redmond Morris is executive producer. Charlie Woebcken, Christoph Fisser and Henning Molfenter from Studio Babelsberg serve as co-producers. Zwanzigste Babelsberg Film GmbH, a subsidiary of Studio Babelsberg AG, is the executive production company.
