Studio Babelsberg presents Germany’s largest indoor water tank for action filming

Babelsberg offers Germany’s largest indoor water tank for water and underwater filming. The new film set was built by Studio Babelsberg’s engineers and construction crews for the action thriller Unknown (US release: February 2011), starring Diane Kruger and Liam Neeson. In parallel to the shooting in Berlin, where, in a spectacular scene, a taxi crashed from the Oberbaumbrücke into the Spree River, stunt and underwater sequences with the actors were filmed at Babelsberg.

Holding 500,000 litres at 4m depth the tank is unique in Germany. Both single shots and demanding action scenes can be filmed in and under water. The tank can be equipped with a 360° green screen around it. For set construction above and under water, the team of the Art Department Studio Babels-berg is available at any time. On demand, we provide skilled camera teams and lighting technicians as well as stunt and safety divers.

In addition to a hydraulic aircraft set, the water tank is yet another permanent interior set at Studio Babelsberg. With it, Studio Babelsberg continues to expand its offer to film, TV and commercial pro-ducers, in order to provide an optimal production environment and remain internationally competitive.
