Students Leave to Work in Los Angeles on New Roland Emmerich Film, "2012“

Six Babelsberg Film School students will fly to Los Angeles to work on „2012“, the latest blockbuster project by star director Roland Emmerich. This project exemplifies the successful implementation of Babelsberg Film School’s aim to provide a practical education.

A dream comes true for six students from various departments of newly founded Babelsberg Film School, as they leave this Fall to work on Roland Emmerich’s („The Day After Tomorrow“) latest film project, „2012“. The block-buster project is being produced by Sony Pictures and Centropolis Entertainment. Shooting locations include Los Angeles and Vancouver. The students from the Digital Film Design department will work for about five months at PIXMONDO, a Los Angeles Based Visual Effects (VFX) company. They will focus on selected sequences that require Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) and Visual Effects. PIXMONDO is German company that operates subsidiaries around the globe including Los Angeles, London, Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin/Babelsberg.

We aim to give our students both an inside view into the inner workings of all areas of film production as well as direct contact to practical, real-life applications. Our cooperation with PIXOMONDO allows our students to work with one of the most prolific VFX production companies and gain experience and collaborate with top-notch digital artists.

The digital effects on "2012" are created under the helm of Academy Award winning visual effects supervisor and co-producer Volker Engel who made a name for himself with his spectacular work on visual effects for Emmerich’s previous action films "Independence Day" and “Godzilla“.

„The VFX business is increasingly becoming more global“, says Thilo Kuther, founder and managing director of PIXOMONDO. „Especially with regards to big-budget productions, producers and companies are looking around the globe for the best talent and good synergies. We are very happy to tap into Germany’s VFX newcomers through this cooperation“, says Thilo Kuther.

Manfred Büttner, Director of VFX studies at Babelsberg Film School adds: „We aim to give our students both an inside view into the inner workings of all areas of film production as well as direct contact to practical, real-life applications. Our cooperation with PIXOMONDO allows our students to work with one of the most prolific VFX production companies and gain experience and collaborate with top-notch digital artists.

"2012" is an apocalyptic action-adventure with a large number of VFX scenes. Roland Emmerich serves as director. The cast will feature John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrelson and Danny Glover, among others. The theatrical release is planned for Summer 2009.

The next class in Digital Film Design at BFS will begin in time for the winter semester on October 1st 2008. Prospective students are invited to find out more about the course and apply at www.babelsbergfilmschool.de.
