Theatrical release of science-fiction thriller “Pandorum“ with Dennis Quaid

Art Department Studio Babelsberg built futuristic movie sets

The end time movie Pandorum starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster, shot at Studio Babelsberg, opens on October 1. Director Christian Alvart created in Babelsberg a futuristic action movie about the struggle for mankind’s survival.

The shooting at Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam lasted from August to December, 2008. Production company Constantin Film assigned the successful producers’ trio Robert Kulzer, Jeremy Bolt and Paul W. S. Anderson (Resident Evil movie franchise, The Dark, DOA – Dead or Alive). The producers talk about perfect shooting conditions: “The crews in Babelsberg are excellent and Berlin is a great city. Who wouldn’t like to stay here for five months?”, says Jeremy Bolt. Also director Christian Alvart expresses his enthusiasm: “I’ve already produced Antibodies here and I really like the people working at the Studio. And I wanted to rely on people, who I know – especially on such a challenging project like Pandorum”.

We are proud that we have realized all the wishes of the director and the set designer – and that we could always stick to the budget guidelines and timelines, also thanks to our well-organized logistics.

The Babelsberg Studios provided the conditions required for the complex shooting. “We envisioned huge movie sets, which would show the Elysium and the whole dimension of this mission”, said producer Robert Kulzer. The film makers wanted the audience to feel the overwhelming size of the spacecraft, which could house up to 60,000 passengers. The demanded sets were built at the stages of Studio Babelsberg.

Michael Düwel, Managing Director Art Department Studio Babelsberg:
„More than 90 craftsmen were engaged in building 22 movie sets. The requirements for the specific futuristic world of spacecraft were high and confronted even our best-skilled workers with tricky problems. We are proud that we have realized all the wishes of the director and the set designer – and that we could always stick to the budget guidelines and timelines, also thanks to our well-organized logistics”.

Plot summary:
On board of a huge space ship, astronauts Payton (Dennis Quaid) and Bower (Ben Foster) wake up from an extended hyper sleep – with no orientation and no recollection. They are left on their own and they don’t have much time: The energy system of the ship is about to break down. Bower sets out for the bridge - but the way to their only chance to escape death leads through dark and narrow ventilation shafts. Very soon they discover that they are not alone on board…
