The film is produced by Hengameh Panahi (Celluloid Dreams Productions) alongside Francois-Xavier Decraene.
Co-producers are Charlie Woebcken, Christoph Fisser and Henning Molfenter (all Studio Babelsberg) and Torsten Poeck (Clou Partners). Line producer is Jasmina Torbati. The story is inspired by the life of Satrapi’s great-uncle Nasser Ali Khan, a famous musician, who decided to die after his violin was irreparably damaged. In his last seven days, he remembers the loves and losses, the successes and disappointments of his life. The graphic novel Chicken with Plums won the Best Album Award (Prix du Meilleur Album) at the Angoulême International Comic Festival in 2005.
