And the Oscar goes to… Germany

Four Oscars for the Studio Babelsberg co-production THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL has been awarded with the film industry’s most coveted and significant prize in four categories: Best Score for Alexandre Desplat, Best Production Design for Adam Stockhausen, Best Costume Design for Milena Canonero and Best Make-up and Hair for Frances Hannon and Mark Coulier.

Thereby, Studio Babelsberg films have received a total of 14 Oscar wins and 40 Oscar nominations since 2002.

Christoph Fisser, COO of Studio Babelsberg and Executive Producer of THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL: “We congratulate Wes Anderson and his crew on this well-earned award. And we are pleased and grateful for this wonderful cooperation. These prizes are particularly an honor for the film production location Germany. Therefore, the congratulations go to 350 members of the Babelsberg film crew - to the numerous set construction workers and to the hair and make-up artists, to all film technology companies, the suppliers, to the Ministry of Culture and to the German Federal Film Fund, to the local film funding institutions in Berlin-Brandenburg, Saxony and Baden-Wuerttemberg as well as to the city of Görlitz, which is now named Görliwood, not without good reason. They were all a significant part of the film.”

Carl Woebcken, CEO of Studio Babelsberg and Executive Producer of THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL: “Films like The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Hunger Games or Stephen Spielberg's St. James Place (which recently wrapped at Babelsberg), show that here in Germany we are able to work at the highest international standard. The tradition of filmmaking, the excellent handcraft and the various filming locations are important driving forces, why directors want to film in Germany. We can be proud of that. However, it is indispensable to create suitable conditions in terms of film subsidies so that international filmmakers will still produce their films in Germany in the future.”

Studio Babelsberg is particularly pleased about the wins in the below-the-line categories, which are related to the handicraft work of Studio Babelsberg during the filming.

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL was produced by Studio Babelsberg in 2013. The filming with the all-star cast took place entirely in Germany, mainly in Görlitz and other locations in Saxony as well as at Studio Babelsberg. The world premiere was celebrated as the opening film of the Berlin International Film Festival in 2014. Furthermore, the British-German co-production won one Golden Globe and five BAFTA awards.

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL is a British-German co-production of Grand Budapest Limited (UK) and Studio Babelsberg (Germany). Wes Anderson, Scott Rudin, Steven M. Rales and Jeremy Dawson act as Producers. Christoph Fisser, Charlie Woebcken and Henning Molfenter are the Executive Producers.

The film was supported by the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF) and the local film funding institutions Mitteldeutsche Filmförderung, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and MFG Filmförderung Baden-Württemberg.

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL recounts the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune - all against the backdrop of a suddenly and dramatically changing continent.

In addition to starring Ralph Fiennes and Tony Revolori in the lead roles, the film also features F. Murray Abraham, Mathieu Amalric, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Tom Wilkinson, and Owen Wilson.
