World Premiere for "Inglourious Basterds" in Cannes

The Studio Babelsberg production Inglourious Basterds was selected for Competition at the 62th Festival de Cannes. Festival’s General Delegate Thierry Frémaux announced the Official Selection at a press conference in Paris. Quentin Tarantino’s movie was produced almost completely in Germany and was entirely realized by Studio Babelsberg as executive production company. Inglourious Basterds was shot at Studio Babelsberg as well as on location in Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony. The cast includes international stars such as Brad Pitt, Mélanie Laurent, Mike Myers and Michael Fassbender as well as numerous German actors, among others Diane Kruger, Christoph Waltz, Daniel Brühl, Til Schweiger, Gedeon Burkhard, Sylvester Groth, August Diehl, Martin Wuttke, Richard Sammel, Christian Berkel, and Sönke Möhring.

Inglourious Basterds was funded by German Film Fund (DFFF), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM). Studio Babelsberg as full service provider and executive production company was in charge of the entire production process. Over the last years, the Studio Babelsberg crews made a name for themselves. The references include The Bourne Supremacy, The Pianist, V for Vendetta, The Bourne Ultimatum, Around the World in 80 Years, The International, Valkyrie, The Reader, Machan, Speed Racer, and currently Roman Polanski’s The Ghost.

Inglourious Basterds will be released in German theatres on August 20, 2009. The movie was produced by Academy Award-nominated producer Lawrence Bender. Erica Steinberg and Lloyd Phillips, as well as Bob and Harvey Weinstein are executive producers. Studio Babelsberg’s co-producers are Charlie Woebcken, Christoph Fisser and Henning Molfenter. Pilar Savone is the associate producer. The Weinstein Company and Universal Pictures, through their newly formed International Studio, are co-financing and co-presenting the film with TWC handling domestic distribution and Universal handling international distribution.
