Laying of the foundation stone for the new exterior set in Studio Babelsberg

Today saw the management of Studio Babelsberg AG joined by the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Sigmar Gabriel, and the Prime-Minister of Brandenburg, Dietmar Woidke, for the laying of the foundation stone for the new exterior set of Neue Berliner Straße. The so-called modular hybrid set is unique in Europe and offers international film producers attractive shooting possibilities in state-of-the-art technical conditions. Studio Babelsberg thus safeguards the attractiveness of the capital's region as a hub for film production as well as its international competitiveness.

An exterior set with streets in various architectural styles is planned on an area of more than 12,000 square metres. This will consist of classic removable facades which can be deployed as modules in combination with moving image backgrounds for green and blue screen filming for film and television productions. The Neue Berliner Straße will be managed in future by the subsidiary Art Department Studio Babelsberg GmbH, benefitting as a hybrid set from the experiences of the past few years and the technical demands of digital film production. Depending on one's needs, the layout as well as the digital backgrounds can thus be individually exchanged, added or altered according to the projects' requirements by moving the set walls, streets and pavements, or through conversions and extensions of apartments, shops, and facades.

In total, Studio Babelsberg is investing over 12 million Euros in this project. This investment is of major significance for the studio and, in particular, the Art Department Studio Babelsberg. The combination of a permanent exterior set with adjacent studios as well as workshop and construction areas stands for effective production conditions.

Prime-Minister Dietmar Woidke
: „Studio Babelsberg combines myth and modernity. The studio once again does justice to this claim with today's laying of the foundation stone. The „old Berliner Straße“ has undoubtedly written German film history. Its successor will now meet the established technical standards for film and television production. It is also through such further developments that film and TV formats can remain competitive in the digital age. With its acquisition of the plot of land for the set, the new set's construction, and the purchase of the former railway sheds, Studio Babelsberg AG makes a clear commitment to the location.“

Charlie Woebcken, CEO Studio Babelsberg AG:
„We are competing with film production hubs throughout the world. A permanent exterior set was always an important element in Babelsberg's attractiveness as a location. We will meet the current artistic and technological demands with the Neue Berliner Straße and hope that the new offer will enable us to continue to acquire both German and international TV, advertising and feature film productions.“
